One month.
Never had one month taken so long to pass by. Aindi had had to move on, had to see his family and a number of other things. Rh'einn had understood that. He didn't own Aindriu. The blond had said he'd return, but he didn't say specifically when...
Rh'einn just hoped nothing bad had happened; Aindriu looked so vulnerable, he was just a magnet for people who wanted to take advantage of him. The war had also broken out, which made it considerably dangerous for Aindriu to cross the border. Damn, he wished he could have ignored his responsibilities here and just gone with him. But such a think had not been, cannot be possible. Not at this time. He was too loyal to the baron; he respected the man and owed him too much.
He'd finished a night shift of guarding the gate, and was heading for the inn where he'd made one of the rooms his own; he was paying for it, but he'd been staying there for months, so it was as if he were renting it. He supposed he should get himself a proper home, but he just couldn't bring himself to bother.
And that bed...Memories of having Aindi there made his eyes unfocus and he had to stop walking for a moment or risk walking into a wall.
This wasn't love, it couldn't be. But it was damned close. Rh'einn groaned and ran a hand through his long brown hair. He needed to bathe and sleep. So with sigh, the dark male walked into the inn, and up the stairs to the second floor while fishing his key out of his pocket. The only sounds he could hear were the sound of his boots on the stairs, and the metallic rattle of his armour.
~~~~
He couldn't sleep. Rh'einn hadn't bothered with a bath, simply falling into bed in nothing but his undergarments. But, sleep was not coming. He was too worried about Aindi.
With a groan he pushed himself up, dressed warm, then headed out for a walk. He nodded at the guards as he walked out of Maesser and into the surrounding woods. Probably not the safest place for a walk, especially considering the war...but he didn't care enough. He just wanted to know that the little blonde was safe and sound somewhere, and not... He had to stop that train of though, allowing himself to get distracted by the cold air, his long strides, and the sound of snow crunching under his boots.
When your tears are spent on your last pretense And your tired eyes refuse to close and sleep in your defence Aindriu Syden Nuckols --------------------------------------------------------------------------........................................................................................................~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Large brown paws equipped with heavy claws made deep impressions in the snow as the black nose sniffed around. All seven hundred pounds of muscle and strength set on a mission. He sneezed shaking his head getting put off from what he was looking for, but he couldn't be put off now. He picked up on it again, and barked from the excitement and started thundering through the trees towards what he hoped was what, no who, he was looking for.
Continuing through the trees, hopefully the other was as close as he guessed for he couldn't keep this speed up forever. Though it was exciting still being able to experience something so powerful. He had only seen something like this creature once before since they did not interact with humans much, but he could never get the image of the mother and her cubs from his mind. Aindriu stopped when he was able to see him and Rh'einn could probably see him now as well considering his size and all the sound he was making through the forest.
He walked slowly closer to Rh'einn, trying not to scare him. Aindriu had realized many didn't associate with animals as much as he did and seeing a large grizzly only feet away from yourself would cause some distress for any man. He gave another short bark to Rh'einn trying to show some way that he was himself. Rh'einn was still one of the few that knew of his shifting ability and the only one to ever see him actually change. It would be much easier to change back to communicate but it would be too embarrassing and much too cold. Lyric was following loosely behind him with his things, but she was still far too much behind him to change now.
Testing his hope that the other understood, Aindriu moved forward pressing his his head into Rh'einn's stomach. He had missed the other so much and so much had seemed to have had happened in the time they were apart like this form he was in now. As excited as he was and the new found strength in this form, he wasn't paying much attention to the force he was putting on the other.
If he hadn't been so distracted, and maybe if he'd gotten some sleep, Rh'einn would have noticed the noise sooner. However, by the time he paid any attention to the sound of a bear barreling through the woods toward him, the large creature was already in sight. It stopped running, stopping a short distance from him.
The mage had tensed, his magic at his mental fingertips, ready to use in an instant. However, wouldn't the bear just run right into him if it'd meant to attack him? Rh'einn hadn't interacted with many animals, except horses, in his life, therefore he couldn't read bear too well. However, he'd heard of attacks by these creatures, and he didn't think they stopped like this before an attack. The bear was also not raising itself on its back legs. That was a good sign...
The tension remained in his body as the bear walked forward, something like a sincere look in it's large brown eyes, then pressed its head to Rh'einn's stomach. His eyes widened and he uncurled his fists. What the...
One wrong move and the thing could take a chunk out of his stomach, leaving him gutted in he snow. Not a pleasant way to die, surely. It would either be that, or being eaten by the thing. Rh'einn moved slowly, as not to frighten the thing, resting his long fingers on the bear's head. The fur wasn't soft, but it wasn't harsh to the touch either,
"Strange bear..."
If he'd seen Lyric with all of Aindi's baggages, it would all have become clear. But as the mare hadn't yet caught up, this was a mystery Rh'einn was a little too tired to figure out on his own.
When your tears are spent on your last pretense And your tired eyes refuse to close and sleep in your defence Aindriu Syden Nuckols --------------------------------------------------------------------------........................................................................................................~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The boy, well bear at the moment, was quite pleased with himself. He had found Rh'einn just like he had told Lyric that he would. Aindriu pushed his head more into the other since there wasn't much else of a way to say hello in this form, that he could think of. Then he felt the hand on his fur and let the other feel his blond tipped fur. That was how the grizzly got its name after all, the light tips on the end of the fur making it look grizzled.
Quickly moving his head, even if he was enjoying this, and licked Rh'einn's hand like a dog would to say hello. Aindriu didn't know if that was 'proper' bear etiquette, but right now he really didn't care about that. He moved again, circling around Rh'einn pushing in to him as he continued with short barks and gruffs as if Rh'einn could understand him. Aindriu was trying to make Rh'einn understand without changing back just yet.
Lyric had finally caught up with her odd boy after he had decided to bolt on ahead. She had reasons of not running through such wooded areas and he was making enough noise that it was easy enough to follow. She snorted at her boy's behavior pushing into the other human. Aindriu gave another bark towards Lyric now before pushing up against Rh'einn again. Hopefully Lyric would help, not any horse in their right mind would purposely come this close to a bear except he wasn't a true bear.
This time he caught the sound of another large animal pushing through the trees, and he tried to keep his eyes on the direction the sound was coming from as well as on the large bear circling him. It kept making a sound at him, but he didn't understand what it meant. Was he in the bear's territory? No it would have reacted much more violently than this. Did it want to play? That wouldn't be very bear like of it...
Then he caught sight of Lyric's familiar colours and his lips broke into a smile. If Lyric was here, it meant Aindi couldn't be far. But the blonde wasn't in the saddle, and he didn't see him walking along behind Lyric. So...where was he?
His heart sank as he dreaded the worst, "Lyric...? Where is he?" Some of the panic showed in his voice, and his eyes had widened a little. Rh'einn's chest went cold and his stomach went into knots. Had Lyric come here because her master had...
The bear's movement caught his eye, and he looked at the large creature more closely. Could it be...? It wasn't acting like a normal bear, and Lyric was smart, she wouldn't come near a dangerous animal like this without reason.
"Aindriu...? Is that you...?"
When your tears are spent on your last pretense And your tired eyes refuse to close and sleep in your defence Aindriu Syden Nuckols --------------------------------------------------------------------------........................................................................................................~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Aindriu snuffed when Rh'einn knew who Lyric was right away but had yet to even give a guess at to he was. He was jealous over his horse and best friend, even if he didn't realize it himself. After all the work he had done to change into this massive creature of muscle, fur, and claws, then Lyric was the one to receive any greeting. Well no, it didn't sound like a greeting and was off but still.
Then Rh'einn had looked at him and gave another lick on his hand to answer his question. It wasn't as if he could speak with the other since obviously that hadn't worked the first time. Aindriu just wanted to see the other, talk to him in a manner that Rh'einn could understand after all that had happened. This new powerful form he had learned just in case with the now war of his country against Rh'einn's, but he had never expected it to be this much fun.
A idea perking up in the shifter's mind as he moved quickly hoping to catch Rh'einn before the other realized what he was doing. Aindriu ducked a bit slidding his nose than head between Rh'einn's knees trying to get the other on his back so they could get out of the snow. He may have all this thick fur at the moment but he wasn't going to test to see if it would last out through the entire night.
Relief thawed the cold that had seized his chest as he put all the pieces together. This was Aindi, it had to be him. It was all too coincidental otherwise, and Rh'einn wasn't sure if he believed in coincidence or not.
He was very much in need of sleep; after working all night, and the little sleep he'd been getting lately in general, due to worry about Aindi and the war...It was quite easy for Aindriu to catch him off guard, bumping him up and onto his wide and furry back. Rh'einn was on his stomach, on a grizzly bear's back, and he found himself blinking at Lyric.
Once he adjusted, the slender mage managed to turn himself around, so he would be facing forward, "What're you doing..?" He felt the warmth pulsing out from that thick fur, the hard muscle coiling beneath him, and only then realized he'd gotten quite cold.
Rh'einn pressed into the fur, his face buried into the fur at Aindi's neck. "I thought something had happened to you..." He wasn't the best at expressing himself, and even a simple phrase like that was spoken --somewhat muffled-- into the thick brown fur. Now that he no longer had to worry, Rh'einn felt the full weight of his exhaustion.
He wasn't sure if this was a new form for Aindi or not, since they hadn't talked much about the blonde's shifting while they'd spent time together a month ago. But he would congratulate the boy once he was in his human form, and able to speak back.
"Can't let anyone see you like this. Could be dangerous, especially in he city..." He ran slender fingers over the bear's ear, "There's an abandoned old stable near Maesser's gate, you could change back there..." The image of himself riding into Maesser on the back of a bear just too amusing; but it would be much too risky for Aindi. He would not risk the blonde's life like that.
When your tears are spent on your last pretense And your tired eyes refuse to close and sleep in your defence Aindriu Syden Nuckols --------------------------------------------------------------------------........................................................................................................~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Aindriu gave a snort at the question with his lack of vocal range in this form didn't allow him to laugh. He waited until Rh'einn stopped moving before heading forward himself while the other was still talking. This was something he had always wanted to try after Lyric saying he had no clue what he was talking of, though a bear was greatly different than a horse. Ah well, he was having to much fun being a bear right now and the feeling of Rh'einn's hands in his fur.
He set the pace, not nearly as fast as he had been going through the trees before because this bulky form was definitely not meant for much speed. Aindriu turned his head back slightly as the other suggested the old stables. He had forgotten most didn't accept a bear as he was so kindly as he would have himself. Though the thought of walking around the city with Rh'einn on his back was amusing to him right now.
When they got closer to the gate, the shifter got another little idea to use to mess with the other on his back. Aindriu looked back at Rh'einn again catching the other's face in one of his large dark eyes giving the other a bark of a warning. That was all he gave as he slowly started picking up speed, hoping that Rh'einn would catch on to what he was doing and grab on. Those large shoulders rolling under his fur as he reached a speed that no human could match on foot. He may come to regret this later with the running and shifting, but right now with what he assumed what Rh'einn had meant by stables that was far from his worries.
Aindriu slowed as they reached the old building turning to wait on Lyric, who had been taking her time and letting her boy have his fun. Then with her caught up, Aindriu made his way into the building. He finally stopped to let Rh'einn slide off so he could shift back, the mare coming up beside them snorting at the dark haired human to get off her boy. The bear moved pulling something off Lyric's back, something that would have never happened without such magic as this.
Then the magic slipped over the shifter's form taking away all that fur and trading it with the boy's original blond appearance. Once all the dark fur and large paws had disappeared, Aindriu quickly slipped on the shirt and pants he had just pulled from Lyric's back. At least it was something, but still it wasn't anywhere near to a bear's coat. He rolled his shoulders back, still trying to get back to the normal feeling, before looking at Rh'einn through now human eyes and smile, "Hi."
He held on loosely, as the bear's pace wasn't the quickest at first, however when Aindi gave him a look over one of those large shoulders, Rh'einn had a feeling he needed to prepare for something. The large creature began to run, and the mage had to tighten his grip on the fur, as well as press his legs tight against Aindi's sides.
It was strange, being pressed up against Aindi like this...with the smaller male not being human, and in fact being larger than Rh'einn. There was nothing sexual about what they were doing at the moment, but Rh'einn just found himself thinking about how odd an experience this was.
And odd as it was, he was going to treasure it. He felt immense relief over Aindi showing up like this, seemingly safe and sound.
The human loosened his grip again as they stopped outside the stables to wait for Lyric, then headed inside. He was already starting to get off the bear's back when Lyric snorted at him and he nodded, smiling a little, "Yes, I know I know."
He understood that the mare was protective of Aindi, and that she only wanted what was best for the blond boy. Rh'einn had slid off and taken a few steps back, giving Aindi some room. While his lover changed shape, Rh'einn peeked outside, making sure nobody was coming. He knew Aindi was shy, and he didn't want to scare the other boy away by staring at him while he changed.
Rh'einn only turned back around when he heard Aindi greet him with his human voice. A few long strides brought him to stand in front of Aindi, and the mage moved instinctively. He took a hold of the blonde's chin, then lowered his own head and pressed their lips together.
When your tears are spent on your last pretense And your tired eyes refuse to close and sleep in your defence Aindriu Syden Nuckols --------------------------------------------------------------------------........................................................................................................~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ That feeling, that feeling of Rh'einn on his back was not a thing he was surely to forget. It was something he could never do in his true form with him lacking the muscle and weight to pull it all off. Though running through the snow with Rh'einn on his back was fun, at least it was for him.
Aindriu was about to say something to the other, but then that hand was on his chin which shut away any ideas of speech for the moment. Then Rh'einn's lips were on his own, another feeling he doubted would ever leave him. The blond wrapped his arms around the other, he hadn't realized until now how much he had missed all of this. He shivered, not knowing if it was caused by the cold or something else.
That was enough for Lyric as she nipped lightly at Aindriu's arm causing the boy to move away from Rh'einn a bit. That little space enough for Lyric to push her head in snorting at the two. All Aindriu could do was smile at the mare, as she checked her boy pressing her nose to his side after his shifting. The young shifter jumped slightly at the her cold damp nose had met skin. He pushed her head away slightly trying to get her to stop, "I'm fine, promise."
Aindriu looked back at Rh'einn after finally convincing the mare that he was alright. "I told you that I'd come back," he said with a smile to the other.
Rh'einn was glad when his little blonde lover didn't pull away. At least he knew Aindi hadn't changed his mind about them during his time away. However the kiss ended much too quickly, thanks to Lyric. The look he gave the mare was not impressed, but he soon forgot his distaste as he looked Aindi over, "You changed back alright? Nothing went wrong?"
They had to get out of the cold and to Rh'einn's room. Lyric would probably appreciate the warm stable at the inn. Rh'einn took the blonde's hand and gently pulled him to the stable entrance, "Common, let's all get inside."
'I told you that I'd come back,'
Rh'einn smiled back, then realized Aindi wasn't wearing anything on his feet, "Damn...where are your boots?" He looked at the saddlebags on Lyric's back, "And I trusted your word, but with the war and everything...I wouldn't have blamed you if you stayed as far away from the border as you could."
When your tears are spent on your last pretense And your tired eyes refuse to close and sleep in your defence Aindriu Syden Nuckols --------------------------------------------------------------------------........................................................................................................~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "I'm fine," he said with a slight laugh having to repeat himself again, only this time to Rh'einn. The other would have known if something had gone wrong because he wouldn't be able to stand like he was now. That had happened once, a few years back when he first discovered this ability. That was most definitely something he did not want to go through again.
Then Rh'einn had grabbed his hand which helped him to push away such thoughts. Well, as long as he never had it happen again then all would be fine and no one would need to know. He laughed at the others question, "Well I haven't had a chance to get them." Aindriu smiled at the other as he went around his mare to find the boots in question. "See," he said finally finding them and fishing them out before pulling them on.
Aindriu continued his conversation with the other trying to keep is own mind away from things he didn't want to think about, such as the war. He had thought going home was bad before, but now it had become even worse than he could have thought. Father was pushing the shifter to be more and more like he wanted, so he had left again.
Finally the had reached the stables and Aindriu took the bags and things off the large mare. Brushing out her fur, mane, tail, and feather, making sure no little bugs had decided to hitch a ride on his friend. "Ah," he said with realization picking up the one bag carefully, "Here, can you hold onto this? And don't drop it." He held the bag by the bottom instead of the straps, oh he couldn't even think of what would happen if it was dropped.
He was still disappointed that Lyric had interrupted their kiss, but at the same time he was thankful to her for indirectly urging them to get out of the cold faster. Due to being tired, his energy reserves being low, he seemed to be feeling the cold seep into his bones much quicker than he would normally. He was shivering by the time they reached the stables.
As Aindriu brushed the mare, Rh'einn tried to keep moving about, keeping himself warm. He wasn't going to head inside and leave Aindriu alone, she would stay and try to keep himself as warm as possible.
The blonde handed him a bag, instructing him to keep from dropping it. With a blink Rh'einn took the bag from his lover and nodded, "Alright..." He was curious, he had to admit. Making sure to keep a good grip on the bag he'd been given, Rh'einn tossed some of Aindi's saddlebags over one shoulder. He would carry as much as he could once they headed up to his room.
There was no way he was letting Aindriu get his own room. Firstly, he wanted the boy close, for a few reasons, secondly, he wouldn't allow the boy to spend money on another room when they could simply share, and thirdly...Well, he'd have to come up with a third reason when or if Aindriu complained.
"What's in the bag?"
The mage didn't want to be rude, taking a look into the bag without permission, so the simple solution was to bluntly ask the other boy.
When your tears are spent on your last pretense And your tired eyes refuse to close and sleep in your defence Aindriu Syden Nuckols --------------------------------------------------------------------------........................................................................................................~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ He was happy to be back here, even if it were a bit cold for his tastes, for it had become better than his true home. Well many places had become better after his father had decided to make his son 'become a man'. That and the man would not be pleased if he ever learned that his son may love another man. Aindriu guessed that's what this was, he just had no past experience to verify with.
Aindriu smiled when the other took the bag. If only he knew what was in there, well he would see soon enough. "Something important," he grinned not letting his little secret go just yet, "Its too cold to show you out here. So you'll just have to wait." The young blond ducked behind Lyric again giving her a quick second look over before grabbing a few bags himself.
If this had been a normal situation, the shifter would have passed out on his feet from the whole trip, but this was different. He was in Maesser again with Rh'einn, not normal in the least in his eyes.
