Zamiel was born at a time when the southern country of Kale'hern was at its most powerful and prosperous. Her mother died in childbirth and her father struggled to raise her on his own. However, it was difficult for him to take care of a child and continue his demanding work as a blacksmith. He endured for five years, until starvation and his failing health forced him to leave her at the palace in the hopes that they could train her as a servant. They did, taking pity upon the gaunt but clever little girl. Her father promised he would go back to work and save his money until he could come back for her, but the damage to his health had been done and he died shortly after.
Zamiel was cared for by all the servants at the royal palace, especially the cooks, who took great pleasure in fattening her up. She even played with the young prince and princess from time to time, whenever the adults weren't around. One day, when Zamiel was about 8, the princess ran out into the road suddenly and got her leg trampled by a horse and cart. Zamiel rushed to the princess's side and put her hands on her leg. Instantly, the princess's leg was healed, and Zamiel screamed in pain as her own broke in several places. When the driver of the cart came to see what had happened, Zamiel grabbed him, healing her own leg and breaking his instead, though of course she had no idea what she was doing or how. Days later, it was determined by the court healers that Zamiel had an unusual form of healing power, with which she could transfer wounds at half their potency to and from herself.
From that moment, she began training to be a healer, and later a personal guard to the princess. She and the princess developed a deep friendship, and Zamiel often accompanied her wherever she went. She devoted her life to the royal family, her loyalty and love stemming from her gratitude toward them for taking her in as a child and caring for her. Many years passed. Zamiel never married or had children. Indeed, she never seemed to have any interest in such things. All her time was spent in service. In reality, she had developed feelings for the princess, though she dared not speak of them to anyone, let alone act on them. Instead, she forced herself to be content with their friendship.
When Zamiel was 29, the palace got word of an impending assassination attempt. Wanting to draw out the assassin, they sent Zamiel out disguised as the princess. As she rode away from the palace, she was ambushed by several men and dragged off her horse. She fought them savagely for her life, her princess, and her country, killing all but one of them, but in the end she was overcome and her throat slit. As Zamiel lay exhausted and dying on the ground, her blood spilling out around her and darkness creeping in at the edges of her vision, all she could think about was how she had failed. She prayed that her failure would not put the princess's life in danger. Zamiel awoke in the presence of Lilith and Nero, having been deemed worthy to become a goddess.[/blockquote]
