It was exciting that she could finally host the celebration she'd been longing for. She'd gotten up earlier than usual, taken care of her duties around the inn, then she'd washed and put her hair into curlers. Her waist-length hair was a little shorter now that most of the ends were curly.
The girl had taken care of some last minute preparations with the curlers in her hair --much to the amusement of some of the staff. She'd simply laughed it off and continued to do what she was doing. Zurei felt almost jittery with excitement. Since the nights had gotten colder, she and her friends had gone out less and less. The cold really did take the fun out of most things.
This celebration was in honour of one of her good male friends. They had been friends for some years now, and his family didn't have the space to throw the kind of celebration he'd been longing for. Ah'zurei therefore offered the inn as an option out of selfish and selfless reasons.
Ah'zurei laughed at herself and hurried through the preparations. She and her friend Chiyo had hung up the multi-coloured lanterns and most of the decorations the day before. With the help of her 'aunt' --they were not related by blood-- she'd hired musicians and made sure there was a good supply of food and drink --alcoholic and non-alcoholic. This was going to be a good night, she just had that feeling...
Some of the larger men working at the inn, had offered to stay longer, guarding the doors, making sure that no troublemakers would try to disturb the celebration, or take advantage of the food and drink.
Most of her father's income went into the upkeep of his ship and 'salary' of his crew. Therefore the money spent she'd taken from what she'd earned through the inn. Business was slow in the winter months, but she'd managed to scrape enough together for this.
Once she'd arranged her hair into a messy ponytail on the side of her head and slipped into the violet dress she'd set aside for the night, she went about lighting all of the lanterns. They really gave the Red Room a festive atmosphere!
When she finished she spun in a circle, looking around the large suite-like room with pride, the layers of her skirts swinging around her. She and Chiyo had really done a good job. And soon enough her friends and other guests started to arrive. |

She'd met with Daeun before hand at the bar where she worked. Since that had been their first official meeting, he knew where it was, she knew where it was, and well- he had said he didn't have all of his memories back yet, so she wanted to make it as easy as possible on him.
He was kind and sweet, at least she thought. She would have never known he used to be a pirate captain- she DIDN'T know that he used to be a pirate captain. His unsure nature matched hers, and well, she felt like she connected to it. She wanted to get to know him better, so she'd invited him to this party in J'tai's place. "Not many people are here yet..." she told the man she'd brought a long. "I've never been to a party, so I'm not sure what to expect," she blushed as she realized that she'd let that slip. It wasn't as if it were a secret, but she knew there would be a lot of pretty girls there, and she didn't want to seem like the weird one who was too pathetic to...
Yes, she did worry about her image. And she did worry about people liking her. But really, was wanting to be liked such a bad thing. "Umm... if it's... not to much to ask, will you... maybe... if you want... dance with me tonight?"
---
J'tai hadn't taken the job. Apparently there were some complications with a wife, a baby on the way, and there was a high risk he was going to get accused of stealing something from them. And frankly, he didn't feel like erasing anyone's memory tonight. Not when he could be going to a party. He hadn't had time to find Chiyo- or rather, he'd stopped by her apartment and she wasn't there, so he decided to hit the party up alone.
So that's where he was, looking around and checking everything out. He had to hand it to her. She and her friend had done a nice job with the decorations. by your thoughtless scheming tagged [ person ] words [ words ] credits [ roasty ] song [ break your little heart ]

In an effort to pay back Chiyo for what she had done, the former pirate captain had tried that morning to start earning his own keep at the inn. Not knowing where his strengths lay, they'd put him to washing dishes, but when he'd accidentally dropped and broken one they limited him to unbreakables like pots and pans. He seemed to do well with that, using his strength to scrub them cleaner than they'd ever been. He was pleased he had found something he could do to alleviate Chiyo's burden, so he was in a pretty good mood already.
The Red Room was just as the name would suggest--red. The light from the lanterns hung all around cast a colorful glow over everything. He realized with a start that it was his favorite color, and that he had named his ship the Crimson Tide as a play on words after a rather morbid phenomenon that turned water red. What a dark sense of humor he must have had to come up with that one. And what an odd thing to remember at a time like this.
He looked at Chiyo, meeting those strikingly blue eyes briefly before looking away in embarrassment, pretending to be fascinated by a lantern as he spoke. "Well, it might as well be my first party too, seeing as I can't remember any." At that, he dared to look up at her again with a shy smile. Every time he looked at her he felt a fluttering in his stomach that he was utterly unfamiliar with. "So we can be new to this at the same time."
He felt a little out-of-place in his dark red pirate coat and high leather boots, but they were the only things he had to wear, and they were the only things he had that really felt familiar to him now. Chiyo, on the other hand, looked lovely, though he had a feeling she would no matter what she wore. It was that unusual light hair, those big blue eyes. He scratched his nose and averted his gaze, trying not to stare at her. She was going to think he was rude if he kept this up.
"D-d-dance?" he stuttered over the word, taken by surprise. He wasn't sure if he could. "I don't know, I... I don't think I know how..." He hoped she wouldn't take that as a refusal; he definitely would have, if he thought he could. In fact, he might even be willing to try it. He just dreaded making a fool of himself in front of people he didn't even know.

She smiled and laughed; Ah'zurei was in a great mood.
When she spotted Chiyo and a handsome man around their age, her mood improved all the more. With a bright smile she made her way over and greeted them both, "Glad you could make it!" Light grey eyes twinkled with genuine joy, "We have food and drinks..." She then motioned to the corner, where the musicians were setting up, "No music yet; they were late." Ah'zurei couldn't let even that bother here, nothing would ruin her mood if she could help it. "But they'll be all set up soon."
Chiyo sure had taste! The man with her was quite handsome, definitely nice to look at, "What's your name?" She wasn't flirting in any way, Ah'zurei was just curious. Besides, she wasn't the type of girl to take interest in her friends' men. And even in general, she wasn't the type of girl to throw herself at any man, or many men at all. She wasn't like that.
She looked toward the door and caught sight of another man around their age. And gods...he was certainly drawing the eye of most of the girls in the large room. She didn't blame them, Ah'zurei didn't mind looking at him either. Her gaze however was not that of a lovestruck puppy. The girl smiled; not too confident, but not too shy either, before turning back to Chiyo and her escort.

He was here to share this experience with her, and that meant the world to her. Chiyo, for what it was worth, was rather trusting if she felt comfortable around someone. She made friends easily, provided they didn't scare her.
And when he admitted he didn't know how to dance, she reached down, entwining her fingers with his. A bold move, sure, but she thought he might appreciate the reassurance. In his situation, she knew he would. "Don't worry. It's not too hard- I can teach you!" truth be told, most of the dances she knew were outdated, but she had practiced and rehearsed them before, and they were all she knew.
She was about to approach Ah'zurei when she noticed the girl heading their way. So she remained put with him until she had arrived before them. "Thanks!" she decided she'd let Daeun introduced himself, but she leaned against him a little. "It's okay, we just got here- you look so beautiful!" Chiyo exclaimed. And it was true, Ah'zurei looked lovely. Chiyo was jealous, but in the friendliest of ways. She held no malice towards the other girl, she just wished, sometimes, she could be her. It was true she rarely got to see her father...

He hadn't expected her to take his hand, but he certainly didn't mind it. In fact, as he looked at her with a mildly surprised but pleased expression, he wondered if she felt the same little spark between them as he did, or if maybe he was just imagining it. It could very well just be wishful thinking on his part. After all, who wouldn't like Chiyo? She was kind, gracious, and definitely cute. And she had saved his life. No matter what she said about not being owed anything, he still felt indebted to her. He dared to squeeze her hand back, giving her a small, shy smile. Somehow holding her hand made him feel a bit safer among people he didn't know.
He was glad she wasn't dismissing him for not be able to dance, but he wasn't entirely sure he would be able to learn, either. He still didn't seem to have complete control over his limbs. As evidenced by the incident with breaking the dish that morning, they seemed to just jerk away from him at random times for no apparent reason. But it was so rare and unexpected, he couldn't predict when it might happen. He was willing to try, though, if it was her teaching him.
"All right, but... don't expect too much," he said.
A moment later, another girl had come up to them and told them about some of the aspects of the party. From the way she spoke, she seemed to be the hostess. This must be the friend Chiyo had told him about. "I'm Daeun. Daeun Koh." He gave a little bow, with a little flourish of his free hand that surprised him, but the gesture came naturally. It was odd; the girl didn't look Wyeshing, but she certainly sounded it. There was no trace of an accent in her speech. He wanted to ask about it, but he thought it would probably be rude. Instead, he asked a question that he thought might bring the conversation around to that at some point. "S-so, you and Chiyo are friends, right? How did you two meet?"

Ah'zurei told Daeun how they had met- it wasn't the most exciting or interesting of stories. They had met each other when the other girl and her friends went to the tavern where Chiyo worked. Some of her guy friends had ended up scaring poor Chiyo, and Ah'zurei had stood up for her. And well, they'd been friends ever since.
Then the girl had caught the sight of someone and was off. When Chiyo turned, she noticed that J'tai had been able to make it. She gave her friend a smile before turning her attention back to Daeun. "Come on!" she chirped, taking his hand leading him to the area where others were dancing. Taking his hands and placing one of her waist and the other in her hand, she began to dance with him.
As she looked up at his face, she found herself blushing. He was so nice and so sweet. He hadn't tried anything 'bad' with her, and he made her feel safe. Most guys she knew made her shiver with revolt- and well, even J'tai scared her from time to time, even though they were friends. There was just something about Daeun that she didn't feel around other boys. The thought made her blush and she looked down at their feet- he wasn't lying, he really was clumsy at dancing, but she didn't mind. It just made her like more. by your thoughtless scheming tagged [ daeun ] words [ 320 ] credits [ roasty ] song [ break your little heart ]

Ah'zurei seemed a bubbly sort of girl. After telling Daeun about how she and Chiyo had first met, she spotted someone else and excused herself to go talk to them. Well, he supposed a person did have to be at least a little extroverted to throw a party like this. He wondered if he had ever thrown any parties, before he'd lost his memory.
But before he could follow that thought, Chiyo had taken his hand and was leading him across the room toward a small group of people who were already dancing. "A-a-already?" he stuttered, suddenly unsure of himself, though he let himself be led along. He hated this stuttering thing he had been doing lately. It was as if his words got caught between his brain and his tongue, and it took actual effort to get them out. To his perception, it made him seem stupid, and that wasn't how he wanted people to see him, Chiyo especially.
All that was erased from his mind when she placed his hand on her waist and took his other hand in hers to start them dancing. If he had been the blushing type, he would have done so then, but only the tops of his ears turned red. He really didn't know how to dance at all, but he tried to follow her movements. However, it quickly became clear to him that his body was not going to cooperate, his feet moving too slowly and unsteadily. As he concentrated harder on matching his movements to Chiyo's, it only got worse. He frowned, keeping his eyes on their feet, but somehow that only caused him to accidentally step on her foot.
"Ah, I'm sorry, I'm not good at this," he said, quickly becoming frustrated at himself. How was it that he got worse as he tried harder? Shouldn't it have been the other way around? As his frustration escalated, things got even worse as his leg suddenly jerked and he lost his balance. He clutched at Chiyo in an effort to right himself, but that just made him pull her down with him as he fell backwards onto the floor.

He seemed to be completely concentrated on his movements and tried to avoid stepping on her, but he wasn't lying- he was clumsy. She gave him her brightest smile of reassurance.
They bumped into some other couples, but she just gave them a soft 'sorry' as they continued their dance. She said nothing and gave no sign of pain whenever he stepped on her foot. He was trying this for her, and she didn't find it to be fair that she should nit-pick at his attempt. She wasn't the best dancer, either, so she knew she had to be contributing to the small catastrophe. But even though they couldn't dance, Chiyo was having the time of her life.
Daeun was so nice, and kind, and sweet. He was so perfect that it scared her to a degree- what if it was all a trap? What if he wasn't real? But he had to be real... he just had to be...
It all came crashing down soon enough. Just as his leg seemed to buckle, he grabbed onto her. Her frame was too small and weak to properly support him, and she toppled over. Landing on top of him with a soft gasp, she ignored everyone around them. Some people were whispering, others were laughing. Certainly, it was a little embarrassing, but she didn't care anything about all of that.
She gave a soft giggle of her own and looked down at the man for a minute longer before she pulled back and sat on her knees. by your thoughtless scheming tagged [ person ] words [ words ] credits [ roasty ] song [ break your little heart ]

It was all such a big mess. The fact that Chiyo was being so nice and polite about it only made Daeun feel worse, because he knew he was the one ruining everything. Then when he fell over and dragged her down with him, he could have punched himself. Why was he so damned clumsy all of a sudden? All he wanted was to make the poor girl happy and dance with her a little bit. Now he'd humiliated her--and himself--in front of all these people. The sound of their whispers and laughter resounded almost painfully in his ears.
"I-I'm so s-s-s... d-dammit!" Even as he tried to apologize, it seemed his mouth wouldn't cooperate, either.
He couldn't bear to look at Chiyo. He just stood up, somewhat unsteadily, and ran out of the room. He didn't stop until he got to the end of the hall, then realized he'd gone the wrong direction, as the stairs were the other way. His knees buckled under him and he sank to the ground, punching the wall in frustration. It didn't do any damage, however. For some reason, that both relieved and angered him. What was wrong with him? Why couldn't he control his own body like a normal person? He had so many questions he couldn't answer, and it frustrated him to no end.
He punched the wall again, this time hurting his knuckles but still not damaging the wall. An urge rose in him to break something, anything, to just go on a rampage and hurl something across the room, but there was nothing, and the idea scared him a little. Why did he feel like this? There seemed to be something seriously wrong with him. He sat against the wall with his legs folded under him, struggling with a torrent of conflicting emotions, staring at the fist that had punched the wall in something like a mixture of anger and disbelief.

Chiyo's own eyes had widened as she watched him stand up and run down the hall. There were a few murmurs, but she ignored them. Their opinions didn't matter. They were petty and ignorant- the few good people there, the ones who didn't feel the need to drag others down, were ignoring the entire thing. J'tai and Ah'zurei still seemed to be talking in the corner of the room. And some of the others were taking snack breaks, away from it all.
She pushed herself off of the floor, but as she stood, she glared at the ones who had laughed at them. Chiyo never glared. It just wasn't in her personality. But she was angry that they had hurt the man she had brought with her- she didn't care what others thought or said about her, but talking bad about a friend was taking it too far. "Shut up." she snapped before hurrying out of the room, leaving those who knew her speechless.
Daeun was collapsed at the end of the hall. Chiyo suspected that he had meant to take a turn down the stairs, but hadn't seen them. It was dark, so it was no wonder he couldn't see...
She slowed her pace as she saw him punching the wall in frustration. The whole image made her regret having put him in such a situation. She hadn't meant to cause him any embarrassment or distress. She had just wanted to have fun with him, even if he wasn't the best dancer. She couldn't have foreseen what would happen, and had he not been so upset, she would have continued to dance with him anyways.
But none of that mattered. She hadn't stopped to consider his feelings. She hadn't stopped to think 'what if he doesn't want to dance and is just doing this for me?' because Chiyo had never had anyone, much less a man, do something for her just because they wanted to make her happy.
"Daeun..." she called his name softly, kneeling down beside him. "I'm sorry... I didn't mean to upset you." this was all her fault. Hesitantly, she touched his shoulder comfortingly. "Please don't be upset. It's doesn't matter what any of them think." she hoped he didn't push her away. She didn't have much experience with this comforting thing, but she was going to try her best. by your thoughtless scheming tagged [ person ] words [ words ] credits [ roasty ] song [ break your little heart ]

Daeun heard the footsteps coming toward him but pretended not to notice, hoping whoever it was was just passing through and wouldn't bother him. But when he heard his name spoken by that familiar soft voice, he looked up and saw Chiyo kneel down next to him. Had she really followed him? Hadn't he humiliated her in front of her friends and ruined their dance? He had tried so hard; he'd really wanted to learn and enjoy himself today, but somehow he had just messed up everything.
Her apology came as a shock as he looked into her big blue eyes. How could she possibly think any of this was her fault? She was sweet, but she really didn't understand. How could she, when he himself didn't understand it? This wasn't the kind of thing that happened to normal people. With a sigh, he leaned into her hand on his shoulder for a moment, wanting to be comforted, but the frustration came back as he did so and he shrugged away from her.
"It's not your fault. There's something wrong with me!" he said exasperatedly, turning his face away from hers, emphasizing his vexation by hitting the wall lightly with the side of his fist. "I have no control over my own damned body! Ever since I woke up, nothing has gone right. I can't have been like this before. I was a fucking captain! A captain can't stutter and jerk like some... some... cripple! Gods, what is wrong with me?!"
His voice had risen to a shout; he was sure he must be scaring her, or at least causing such a ruckus he would be thrown out soon, unless the music down the hall was loud enough for people not to notice. However, most of the anger had drained out of him, as if saying all that had let it out of his body with the words. Now he felt merely miserable as he put his face in his hands and leaned against the wall.

Chiyo observed sadly, noting how the repeated hitting of the wall had caused the skin over his knuckles to break and split- it wasn't terrible, but it would mean he would be sore.
She reached into his small little satchel and took out a white handerkerchief, and gently, she pried his hand away from the wall, taking it so that she would be able to tie the cloth around the wound. And while he spoke, she just listened to him. Truthfully, she didn't know what he was going through, not in his terms, but it seemed that he had once been... of great importance. A captain of his ship and crew, suave and smart...
And now here he was.
Still, she could relate to feeling like there was nothing she couldn't screw up. Everything she had done at her home was met with harsh words, fists, even. So she knew... but even now, she didn't have any advise for him. He was his own enemy, and she didn't know how to overcome that.
"You've been hurt... you're recovering," she kept his injured hand between her own, her power subconsciously taking over as her wish to see him void of pain took over. She gasped in pain as the wound appeared on her hand. But she tried to conceal it. It was minor, really, compared to what she knew.
"I'm sure you'll be back to your old self in no time... ... But I like this part of you," she took the moment to lean against him, just sitting there on the floor with him. "I like you a lot, Daeun." she blushed as she said it, finally admitting it to herself... and to him. by your thoughtless scheming tagged [ person ] words [ words ] credits [ roasty ] song [ break your little heart ]

If Chiyo hadn't brought it to his attention, he probably wouldn't have noticed he'd hurt himself until much later, even though he had been staring at his fist earlier. "Oh." He let her take his hand and bandage it as he slowly lowered his other hand from his face. It wasn't bad; he didn't really care about it, but she seemed to, taking a handkerchief and binding his knuckles. He looked at her with a new appreciation, noting the gasp when she held his hand and the fact that his hand suddenly didn't hurt anymore. Was she some kind of healer? He wouldn't be surprised. She was such a sweet girl, it made sense.
However, he was surprised that she wasn't at least a little bit scared of him, or thought he had some serious issues. That's what he thought, after all, that something must be seriously wrong with him. And while he didn't entirely believe what she was telling him, he did feel better. Just the fact that someone cared enough to try to help him was enough. His face softened from the pained and angry expression that had been there.
Then she mentioned that she liked him. He was too stunned to speak for a moment, staring at her, just letting the idea sink in after all he had just been through. Had he actually heard her right? How could she possibly like him, after what had just happened? Not that he didn't want her to, of course. Chiyo was so kind and sweet and patient with him. She hadn't laughed at him when he fell over or run away when he'd yelled. And she was so cute, with her big blue eyes and shy manner. But there was just no way it could be true. He gently pulled his now-healed hand away, looking down at it and flexing the fingers. There was no sign of injury at all.
"Y-you don't m-m-mean that," he said, lapsing into his stuttering again, still staring at his hand to keep from having to watch her expression. "You're a l-lovely girl, but... I'm all messed up. You d-don't want that."
